The mature vines have developed substantial growth systems, the advantage being greater carbohydrate reserves in the often dry summers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e'The Merton' is a vineyard selection of one of the best blocks, planted 15 years ago to a single high-performing clone, 8048. More important though is the soil beneath the vines. It consists dark cracking clay with limestone chips throughout.
