Laurel Bank 2022 The Merton Pinot Noir
Winery : Laurel Bank
Laurel Bank was established by Kerry Carland in 1986 at Granton, 20 minutes from the Hobart CBD and just north of the Bridgewater Bridge. With a northerly aspect and sloping site, this is a great place to grow pinot noir. The mature vines have developed substantial growth systems, the advantage being greater carbohydrate reserves in the often dry summers.
'The Merton' is a vineyard selection of one of the best blocks, planted 15 years ago to a single high-performing clone, 8048. More important though is the soil beneath the vines. It consists dark cracking clay with limestone chips throughout. This is a soil type and structure you would classically find in the Coal River Valley, not on top of the hill at Granton in the Derwent Valley.
Michele's notes: A sublime, and mouthwatering nose of red cherry fruits, wafts of white pepper, star anise, saffron and red carnation. The wine is juicy and very supple in the mouth with a gentle flow over the palate. It leaves a delicious sensation. And exceptional choice for antipasto and white meats.
