Ata Rangi 2021 Pinot Noir

Clive Paton, the founder of Ata Rangi (which translates as 'new dawn') planted the original home block in 1980, making him one of the handful of pioneers of the Martinborough region. The wines go from strength to strength: Helen Masters' masterful winemaking, vine age, a deep understanding of site and the wisdom of decades shows in every beautiful new release. Made from only the oldest pinot noir plantings on the Martinborough Terrace, this wine is the best of six small vineyards, all within 500 m of the winery. The fabled Abel clone makes up 40% of the blend.

Michele's notes: Deep colour. Lose yourself in the fantastic bouquet of satsuma plum, currants, spices - the whole Christmas mince pie mix - with ferrous/meaty/truffle notes too.

Power with finesse is the Ata Rangi style, and this iteration is a splendid example. Succulent fruit floods the palate and is tempered mocha, bitter chocolate and char from the excellent oak. Ultra fine tannins to finish. Delicious now with plenty of air, but will be in its prime for another 10 years at least.
